Embodied Kinship: Healing & Wholing in an Age of Separation

What does it mean to come into relationship in an age of separation?

What does it mean to be embodied, in a culture built on disassociation?

How do we evolve further than our adolescent culture and identities?

And why do we need to remember how to be in kinship with life?

These are the questions at the heart of Embodied Kinship — my eco-somatic mentoring practice, and the questions I want to answer simply here.

What Does It Mean to Be Fractured?

Most of us are walking around fractured, even if we can't name it. Fractured from our bodies, from each other, from the earth. We've forgotten how to do relationship, how to stay with discomfort, how to feel.

This fracturing is a cultural failure, not personal. We've been shaped by a story of separation. One that has us abandoning ourselves and each other for the myth of progress and individualism.

Relationship means conflict. It means pain, sorrow, grief. Most of us were never taught how to stay with our own pain, let alone someone else's. Embodied Kinship is a practice of healing and wholing that fractured relationship, starting with the one you have with yourself.

When we name a part of ourselves as good or bad, we other it. We push it into exile because it doesn't fit the story of who we're allowed to be. And that pattern doesn't stay contained within us, it ripples outward. The same othering we do to our own disowned parts is the root of the ways we other and marginalise other people. What gets relegated to the shadows of our psyche doesn't just disappear. It holds power over us from the dark. And yet some of our deepest gold and our greatest gifts live in exactly those shadowed places, gold we can never access until we begin the process of welcoming our fractured parts home.

Ego-Centric to Eco-Centric: A Different Way of Belonging

Our culture trains us into an ego-centric ways of being. Where the self sits at the centre, separate from the land, separate from the more-than-human world, separate from mystery.

Eco-centric living asks something different of us. To remember we are a node in a complex web of relationships that are connected. That we belong to the more-than-human world the way oxygen belongs in our lungs. That reciprocity with the land is a basic dimension of sanity.

This shift from ego-centric to eco-centric is at the root of Embodied Kinship. It's about re-orienting toward relationship, reciprocity, and belonging.

Ecological Awakening as a Path of Healing & Wholing

Ecological awakening is the process of weaving yourself back into the web of life you were never truly separate from. It's remembering that mountains, oceans, rivers and forests are kin, not backdrop.

This awakening isn't only environmental. It's personal. When we exile parts of ourselves like our grief, our intuition or our wildness to fit into a culture that only values what's productive, we enact the same story of separation on our own psyche that we enact on the earth.

Healing and wholing this fracture means welcoming back what's been exiled in the land, and in ourselves.

Eco-Somatics: The Body as Doorway

Eco-somatics is the undercurrent to this work. It's the understanding that the body isn't separate from the mind, and the self isn't separate from the earth. Your body is a landscape, and embodiment is a doorway into that terrain.

We've largely forgotten how to feel. Our parents had to ignore their body's signals to go to work and pay the bills. Many of us, especially women, were taught to override our own intuition and the natural cycles our bodies move through.

To experience the world through eco-somatics lense is to learn the language of sensation again. Re-sensitising ourselves is how we become available to relationship with ourselves, with each other, with the mystery of the more-than-human world.

Descent & Return: Why Thresholds Matter

Every meaningful change asks something of us. In Embodied Kinship, these moments thresholds and the process of moving through them a descent and return.

Descent is the willingness to meet what's difficult: grief, dissolution, the strange otherness in ourselves we've learned to keep at arm's length. Return is what becomes possible once we've met it, more capacity, more wholeness, more relationship.

This rhythm isn't a one-time event. It's ongoing, like breath, like tide. Awakening is a journey of coming inwards and then back outwards again, over and over.

What Is Embodied Kinship Mentoring?

Embodied Kinship is a nature-based, somatic mentoring practice, unfolding over three to six months of fortnightly sessions. Together, we slowly build a different way of relating to yourself and the world. Through presence to sensation and feeling, through invitations and encounters with the natural world, and through following the threads of what's arising rather than a fixed script.

This work starts with self, but it's innately eco-centric. As your relationship with yourself deepens, so does your relationship with others and with the more-than-human world.

It's a healing and wholing practice, one that resources you to be more fully in relationship with life.

Is This You?

If you sense a belonging to the earth you can't quite feel in your body day to day. If you're tired of intellectualising connection and ready to actually experience it. If you're standing at a threshold and don't know how to cross it alone.

You're not broken. You're remembering something your body already knows.
